BEST TIPS FOR A COLLEGE ADMISSION ESSAY:
1. Don’t Procrastinate, Start Early
The stress of writing your college admission essay will be reduced if you get started early. You can include the other tips I have provided by starting to prepare your essay early.
You are setting yourself up for a disaster if you begin writing your essay right before the deadline. Panic will set in, and you’ll probably turn in an essay that you’re not too proud of. With time on your side, you are more inclined to write a top-notch college admission essay.
Start writing your essay months before the deadline would be fantastic.
If you’re anything like me, you will not do your best work when you’re rushing. So, get a head start and avoid the rush! You won’t be sorry you did.
2. Truly Comprehend The Prompt
Make sure you comprehend the essay prompt’s requirements in their entirety. The topic of the essay is the essay prompt, and sometimes the college application may provide you with a variety of themes to select from.
Some examples of prompts are:
Option 1: Share an experience when you were unexpectedly grateful for someone’s kindness.
Option 2: Discuss an accomplishment that demonstrated significant personal development.
As you read through your essay questions, choose the one that most speaks to you. Choose the prompt that you believe you can fully elaborate on due to your thorough understanding of the topic at hand.
3. Be Genuine
Your story and experiences are uniquely yours! In your essay for college admission, be yourself and demonstrate your personality. Your honesty and authenticity will come through as genuine.
Do not try to be someone you think they want.
In your essay, express who you really are. Write in your own voice so the reader can understand who you are, but don’t take it too literally. Please do not include abbreviations such as idk, brb, wth, iykyk or saying words like cap. You get my drift, right?
4. Highlight Your Growth
Whatever topic you choose, don’t forget to include your growth as a person. Talk about the difficulties you have overcome. How you overcame them and what you have learned. Of course, only speak about things that you are comfortable discussing.
Some examples of personal growth:
Example 1: Jeremy tried out for the basketball team two years in a row and did not make the team. He listened to the coach’s critiques and made the necessary changes. On his third attempt, Jeremy made the team rather than giving up.
Example 2: Emily struggled to deal with her parents’ divorce, which affected her academic performance. Emily’s grades improved following an honest conversation with her school counselor.
What is your personal growth story?
5. Express Your Goals
Being goal-oriented is a wonderful characteristic.
What goals are you looking to achieve at the school that you are applying to? What goals are you looking to achieve in your professional life? Make sure your college admission essay addresses those specifics and more!
By providing these specifics, you may set yourself apart from the other applications and allow the reader to learn more about you.
6. Tell A Story
Who doesn’t love a good storytime? As you begin writing to respond to the provided essay prompt keep in mind to tell your story.
You can better display your personality by telling a story.
Since no one else has your story, telling it makes you stand out from the crowd. Your story is specific to you. Again, only share what makes you feel most comfortable, but make every effort to fully engage your readers in your story.
7. Stick To The Word Limit
Please, if there is a word limit specified for the essay, stick to it. Write the essay in the allowed 250 words or less. 500 words or more? Then do that.
Users may find their “word count” in both Google Docs and Microsoft Word. Make sure you are fulfilling the word requirement by frequently checking the word count as you type your essay.
It is not wise to ignore instructions, and failing to do so may result in your application being rejected. I’ve seen it happen!
You have plenty of time to finish the word count without feeling rushed, which is another reason why getting started early is crucial.
8. Don’t Use AI
Artificial intelligence aka AI is a type of technology that allows your computer to perform tasks that typically require human intelligence. So with that being said…
Don’t have AI write your essay for you. The last thing you want is to seem impersonal, unauthentic, or generic for using AI.
Colleges frequently use software that allows them to identify essays written by AI. I advise you to spend some time writing your own essay and to stay away from AI completely.
You can do it!
9. Get Some Feedback
I think it’s a good idea to receive input from someone before hitting “submit,” regardless of whether you have finished writing your essay or are just in the process of outlining it.
Ask an adult you know for criticism on your essay for your college application. You can get feedback from a teacher, school counselor, your parent/guardian, etc.
Be specific on what you would like feedback on.
10. Revise and Edit
Before hitting “submit,” wait for that much-needed feedback. Then, go back to your easy and make the necessary changes to it. By doing this you will improve the quality of your essay.
11. Proofread Before You Click Submit
I want you to read your essay aloud several times after you’ve finished it. I’ve discovered that reading aloud makes it easier for me to spot any grammar mistakes. I strongly advise using that method as well.
Correct any mistakes you discover right away. After that, your essay is flawless and finished. Upload your essay and select “submit.”
Love this! I just sent this to my niece. 🩷
Wow! Thank you so much.
